LIVER DISEASE, THE LEADING CAUSE OF MORTALITY IN MOYO DISTRICT ACCORDING TO REPORTS

Liver-related diseases, including liver cirrhosis are the significant causes of high mortality rate in Moyo district according to a report from the district health department for the last financial year.
Dr Chandi Fred Opeli the medical supretendant Moyo general hospital, revealed to Radio Pacis newsroom that liver disease is the leading cause of mortality cases that are being registered at the facility and in the district which currently stands at 13 percent. ‘‘For mortality, liver disease is now leading though it used to be malaria but I think because of the malaria prevention initiatives like the IRS ,malaria has gone down the order and in the last three to two quarters, we have not recorded any death due to malaria,’’ he explained.
Dr Chandi furthermore said that the other causes of mortality in the district include, neonatal death, anemia, hypertensive diseases, traumas and injuries from the accidents, kidney diseases. ‘‘Chronic liver diseases can be prevented since most of them are attributed to life style, but in our setting here, the commonest is as of result of excessive alcohol consumption, ’he noted.
The report also indicated that The Leading causes of Morbidity are cough or cold at 20 percent, malaria being second at 11 percent, at third is intestinal warms at 9 percent, skin diseases 7 percent ,dental carriers at 6 percent ,anemia ,UTIs and alleges among others
Dr Iddi franklin amolu the district health officer Moyo explained that several factors are responsible for the increasing cases of liver diseases urging the locals to take pre-cautionary measures.
‘‘Liver of course is one of important parts of the body, and there are very many conditions that affect the liver which include excessive use of drugs, local herbs ,self-medication ,hepatitis, excessive alcohol intake and other bacterial infections, so if you don’t seek health attention in time it becomes very costly to replace,’’ he was quoted saying.
The main types of liver diseases are Bile Duct Diseases. Cirrhosis, Fatty Liver Disease. Hepatitis. Hepatitis’ A.Hepatitis B Hepatitis C and Jaundice.
