Madi West Nile diocese and the Lugbara cultural institution Lugbara kari have signed a memorandum of understanding with World Vision, a non-governmental organization to implement a two year child protection project in the districts of Yumbe and Terego.
The 200,000 dollar project targets to improve the well-being of about 174,000 children and their vulnerable communities in Bidibidi zone 3 and zone 5 in Yumbe district, Omugo and O’dupi sub counties in Terego district.
Akullo Annet the faith integration officer at World Vision outlined the components of the 2 year project. “This project has five components, we have child protection, livelihood, mental health, WASH and spiritual nurturing of children and staff in the Uganda Refugee Response, this MOU will help us to implement the designed and agreed activities,” Akullo disclosed.
Andama Richard Ferua the minister of tourism in Lugbara Kari expressed optimism that the MOU will help in addressing the crimes against children in the region. “Once you lose norms, traditions and customs, then the population gets lost and no wonder we are talking about sexual gender based violence, I think this MOU will go a long way in strengthening the relationship between our families,” Ferua explained.

Rev. Godfrey Nasser the diocesan secretary of Madi West Nile diocese titled the MOU as an opportunity “This is an opportunity for the church to be able to support the children and the youth and this relationship is established so that we are able to see our children grow spiritually well and also be able to support them with livelihood skills for survival,” Nasser stated.
Meanwhile Geoffrey Asiku the Senior Education officer of Arua city implored both the cultural and religious leaders to wake up in the fight for child protection and safeguarding.

“The issue of child protection and safeguarding is a terrible one that we must all wake up to address as cultural leaders and as religious leaders, culturally the children belong to our families and if they are to be modeled well they need to develop in church, these days things are taking different dimension,” Asiku pleaded.
The two years project funded by faith and development integration fund is expected to end in 2025.
