Maracha secondary school in Maracha district and St Mary’s Assumpta girl’s secondary school in Adjumani district are set to host this year’s secondary schools zonal ball games I and II championships respectively.
This decision was made after a thorough inspection of the four schools that bided to host the games this year by the officials of Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) In West Nile zone.
Abima Rahman, the chairperson of the inspection committee says the schools need to meet certain standards to host the zonal games.
“We inspected these venues and there are things that we looked at when we go for the inspections, these are things that will target the successful hosting of big numbers, of the four institutions that wrote their bids to host this year’s games, we have recommended that all of them have some work to do, but others have less work to do than others,” Abima said.
The schools that applied but did not meet the credentials are Moyo and Angal secondary schools in Moyo and Nebbi districts respectively.
Kasiano Alioni, a teacher from Maracha secondary school which will host the ball games one in partnership with Maracha domestic confirms their readiness, ”as a school, we have done all it takes to host these games and I call upon the community around to utilize this opportunity jealously.”
“As a school, we deliberately chose to apply, aware that we had facilities, some of which definitely require some fixing somehow, but we trusted our capacity to host these competitions, there is a lot of benefit being taken to the community around, especially being business community,” said Alioni.
Similarly, Brian Paul Ambaku from St Mary’s Assumpta girls’ secondary school said it is an opportunity for Adjumani district to adopt some of the games in ball games II.
“This ball games two is going to give us an opportunity to promote other games that have not been practiced or played in the district, and as a school, we are really very ready, we are trying to build a team,” Ambaku said.
Ball games I involves football for boys and girls, and ball games II in second term comprises of basketball, volleyball, handball and athletics.
