At least 1700 farmers in west Nile famers are set to receive the 9.7billion shillings in compensation for the unpaid tobacco sales to continental Tobacco (U) Ltd during 2018 Crop Season.

As Part of the requirements during the exercise, Ministry of Trade Industry and cooperatives has asked farmers present Original National Identification Cards, authentic sales receipts, letters from the area LC I plus a recommendation from the Gombolola Security Officers while letters of administration for those farmers who died before receiving their monies.

Senior Commercial Officer at Ministry of Trade Industry and cooperatives Ronald Ndawula says farmers who are claiming less than 200,000 shilling do not need to go through tedious processes and they only need to bring receipts and IDs for verification with a mobile money number in the names of the framer to receive the money.

Ndawula cautions on forgery and falsification. “If you forge anything, if you impassionate, those issues are going to be handled to police, but if you lost your receipts, you must present a letter from police.”

Whereas Godwin Angalia the Terego Resident District Commissioner encourage the farmers to invest the money in income generating activities.

“We have an operation in Terego to see that everybody must be rich, therefore you must use this money very well and multiply it. If we find that you received this money and you don’t have even a chicken you will explain in details.”

Farmers raise concerns on the tedious processes to be followed before accessing the money.

Government of Uganda officially commenced the 8 days verification and payment exercise across the six districts of Arua, Yumbe, Terego, Madi-Okollo, Koboko and Maracha on February 6, 2025 and is expected to end on Wednesday February 12, 2025.
