Vincent Arnold Nsamba, the prime suspect in the murder of Afrigo Band founding member Moses Matovu, has been remanded by the Makindye Magistrates Court as police and prosecutors continue investigations into the musician’s death.
Nsamba appeared before the court and was formally charged with murder before being remanded until November 3, 2026, when he is expected to return for mention of the case as the State completes its investigations.
Nsamba is accused of being involved in the killing of Matovu, who died on September 24, 2026, after sustaining serious injuries during an attack in Kibuli, Kampala.
The 41-year-old suspect was arrested on September 24 in Ochange Ward, Yesu Amala, Nansana Division, Wakiso District, following investigations into the circumstances surrounding Matovu’s death.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Rachael Kawala, preliminary investigations indicated that Matovu went to the residence of a woman identified as Rose at about 5.30am on September 24.
Kawala said that as Matovu and the woman were leaving the residence, they were confronted by a man believed to have previously been in a relationship with her, triggering a physical confrontation.
Police said the exact circumstances surrounding the attack were still being established.
Matovu sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Kibuli Hospital by a boda boda rider, but later died. The case was subsequently registered at Kabalagala Police Station as murder.
Police also arrested the woman and recovered exhibits from the scene, including a concrete paver. Bloodstains covered with ash were also reportedly found near Matovu’s vehicle.
The circumstances surrounding the killing have, however, attracted differing accounts. Government minister Balaam Barugahara condemned the killing and called for those responsible to be arrested and prosecuted, but said Matovu had been attacked by a gang as he returned from work on the night of September 23.
Police’s preliminary account places the confrontation at about 5.30am on September 24.
Matovu, popularly known as Papa Moi, was one of Uganda’s most celebrated musicians and a founding member of Afrigo Band, which he formed in Kampala on August 31, 1975, alongside Tony Ssenkebejje, Jef Sewava, Charles Ssekyanzi and Jessy Gitta.
Born in Kawempe on June 19, 1949, Matovu entered the music industry in the 1960s, first performing with the Thunderbirds Band before joining the Police Band and later the Cranes Band.
Afrigo Band celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2025, marking five decades of Matovu’s contribution to Uganda’s music industry.
The case will return to Makindye Magistrates Court on November 3, 2026.
