Speaking during a community engagement in Afoji Parish, Iranya Charles, the Parish Councilor and a farmer, encouraged residents to take agriculture seriously and utilize available land productively.

“In Uganda, we say agriculture is the backbone of the country. As leaders, we need to encourage and educate our people about agriculture. Therefore, I am advising all farmers and community members to wake up and work hard, as emphasized by our President. Agriculture can greatly improve our lives, and we must embrace it in order to become productive,” Iranya said.

Meanwhile, Anzuvuku Savior, the Parish Chief of Moyo Sub-county, stressed the need for farmers to put more effort into farming if the district is to achieve its goal of reducing poverty by 2028.

“I encourage all farmers in Moyo District to embrace agriculture. Even people in formal employment engage in farming, and that is why many are able to support their families well. Farming should be taken as a profession. Whenever farmers encounter challenges, they should consult agriculture officers at the sub-county or district level for guidance. Our goal is for Moyo District to emerge from poverty through agriculture by 2028,” Anzuvuku emphasized.

On his part, Yaba Alex Wani, a Production Officer, encouraged both farmers and the wider community to consistently engage in farming to improve their livelihoods and economic well-being.

“I encourage everyone to actively participate in planting and farming activities. Agriculture contributes to economic growth, both at the individual and community levels. We need money for school fees, healthcare, and other family needs, and farming can provide these resources. Those with idle land should put it to productive use so that we can collectively overcome poverty,” Yaba noted.

Agriculture remains the backbone of Uganda’s economy, and many households across the country have transformed their livelihoods through farming.
