As the world prepares to commemorate World Sight Day on October 9, Moyo General Hospital has raised concern over a significant rise in ophthalmic cases being reported at the facility.

Speaking to Radio Pacis, Madrwa Stephen, a Clinical Officer in the hospital’s Eye Department, noted that many patients are presenting with advanced eye conditions — most of which could have been prevented through early diagnosis and treatment. “We are seeing an increasing number of patients with preventable vision loss. This highlights the need for early screening and timely medical intervention,” Madrwa said.

Meanwhile, Osuta Fred, another clinician at the hospital, appealed to the public not to delay seeking medical attention for eye problems. “People should not wait until their vision deteriorates before coming to the hospital. Eye care should be a regular part of your health routine,” Osuta emphasized.

Among those seeking treatment was Opini Saviour, a patient who shared that reading had become increasingly difficult over the past year, prompting him to seek medical attention.
“I used to enjoy reading, but for over a year now, it’s been a struggle. I finally decided to come for a check-up,” Opini stated.

World Sight Day is a global event dedicated to raising awareness about blindness and vision impairment. This year’s theme emphasizes the need for accessible eye care services and proactive prevention strategies to reduce avoidable vision loss.
