The Commissioner for Cooperatives, Robert Barigye, has given loan defaulters of Moyo SACCO a one-month ultimatum to repay their outstanding loans or face arrest.
According to Barigye, Moyo SACCO has more than 10 billion shillings in outstanding loans owed by members who have failed to repay the money they borrowed for a long period, affecting the operations and functionality of the SACCO.
Barigye says defaulters who fail to respond by September 7, 2026 will face arrest. “With effect from next month, anyone who fails to pay the loan they borrowed will face arrest. Some of you have been encouraged by some members to leave the SACCO, but those who are encouraging you have already got what they wanted from the SACCO,” he said.
Meanwhile, State Minister for Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, Hon. Alero Tom Aza, says individuals holding SACCO funds will not escape accountability.
“RDC and the registrar, you have to be ready to make those who picked our money from the SACCO vomit the Moyo. The list is here. I am not going to read it, but you know yourselves,” he said. Hon. Aza says authorities will arrest defaulters and ensure that all outstanding funds are recovered.
The Assistant Resident District Commissioner of Moyo, Julius Nyerere, says loans owed by residents of Moyo and borrowers from outside the district will also be recovered. “As the Office of the President, we shall provide security where it deserves to recover this money,” Nyerere said.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Chief Administrative Officer of Moyo, Ojok Kelli Brani, has called for attention to the Moyo District Local Government staff SACCO, urging authorities to ensure that similar challenges do not affect it.
On his part, Opiku Louis Madera, a co-founder of Moyo SACCO, says members have withdrawn hundreds of billions of shillings from the SACCO, worsening its financial situation. “Our cry here is, how can you get us out of this problem? We really need the money,” he said.
