Parents of Moyo Senior Secondary School have agreed to pay UGX 130,000 as a parents’ contribution to support some of the school’s activities, including paying non-government teaching staff, feeding learners and meeting other requirements aimed at improving academic performance.
The agreement was reached during a PTA meeting held at the school, following a disagreement over the amount initially requested by the school administration and the position taken by the Minister for Local Government, Hon. Balaam Barugahara.
Dravu Michael Iza, commonly known as Senior Citizen, a parent at the school, supported the contribution, saying feeding learners at school will improve their concentration and give them enough time to study.
“I personally agree to pay this money because I want my child to excel academically. Eating is a right of a child. Why should we deny contributing money that is meant to support the school? Yes, we respect the government, but they should all think about our learners. Not all the money government gives can solve all the problems in a school,” Dravu stressed.
Equally, Aserua Jane Sarah, another parent, supported the payment of UGX 130,000, saying the contribution should continue because Moyo Senior Secondary School is academically declining.
“We were once students in this school, but our level wasn’t the same. We used to perform, but now Moyo Senior has lost its strength. Now that we are trying to support our school to retrieve its victory, why are we rejected? For me, as a parent, I will continue to contribute to support Moyo Senior so that it shines again,” Aserua expressed
Meanwhile, Akule Richard, the PTA Chairperson of Moyo Senior Secondary School, appealed to parents to support the school’s improvement and urged them to approach the head teacher whenever they encounter challenges.
“My dear parents, this money is not for the school but for the learners. It is to help the school run its operations smoothly. So, I call upon my parents to help back up the government,” Akule emphasized.
The school head teacher, Vuciri Anthony Eberu, explained that the parents’ contribution is used to facilitate several school activities, including paying cooks, gatekeepers and non-government teachers, as well as purchasing food for learners.
“As a school, this parents’ contribution fee caters for very many things. The cooks, the gatemen and the non-government teachers are paid through this money, including buying food for the learners.
So, they should not think it will be okay if we are denied the opportunity to pay the UGX 130,000. This school will definitely collapse,” Eberu disclosed.
Meanwhile, Tibaku Zira, the Chairperson of the Board of Governors at Moyo Senior Secondary School, said he will closely monitor the school to ensure that the agreement reached with parents is communicated to the Minister for Local Government.
“We will continue offering this money to the school to make sure it stands. Regarding all the agreements made, as the Board of Governors, I will write to the Ministry of Local Government so that they listen to our cry,” said Zira.
According to the Ministry of Local Government, government schools are not entitled to charge school fees, and anyone found enforcing such payments in disregard of government directives will be summoned.
