Following the resolution that the council came out with in December 2024 of banning Scrap business in Moyo town, on Tuesday January 14, 2025, Moyo town council authorities had a meeting with the scrap business dealers as the district security committee came out with some regulations that could shape the Scrap business activities.
Due to public outcry, the council decided to come up with a resolution that all the activities of scrap business is stopped, accusing the dealers of buying valuable and stolen items which are not necessarily scrap especially functioning items like wheelbarrows, saucepans among others stolen from the neighborhoods.
According to Enzama Patrick the assistant town clerk, unless they abide by the resolutions they will be allowed to carry on their business.
“There has been modifications which has been done, one of the modification is that all scrap dealers should provide receipts for every items being sold” he pointed.
Patrick further added that all the other regulations which have been there should be followed without living any stone unturned.
“Should you not follow your licenses will be revoked,” he added.
Kibwika Siraji the chairperson Scrap business said when they elected him as the chairperson of the scrap business in Moyo, they have been trying to put regulations in place, those days we used to record a lot of vandalism, he revealed.
Atama Siraji who started scrap business in Moyo town since 2018 says the community needs sanitization.
“Chairperson said that time of the meeting, locals were complaining to the council about this and they called us for a meeting. I think chairman himself said he also needs to call the community for sensitization about these complains of scarp,” Siraji said.
According Chandiga Ceaser, the town council chairperson, scrap business activities should be temporarily stopped until the business is streamlined.
“The scrap dealers have now deviated from dealing with scrap to household items and they buy these things. They don’t take them to Kampala, they turn around selling the same usable things within the community,” he added.
Ceaser pointed out that, this is sowing seed of hatred among the same community because if one finds his/her wheelbarrow with another person instead of going to the scrap dealer he will now look at that person causing disunity and fights.
