Moyo main market vendors in Moyo district have urged Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) to better sensitize and raise proper awareness on the recommendable weighing scales as they impose measures on the usage of slandered ones.
Majority of the market vendors further accused UNBS for collecting the weighing scale without returning during their operation.
Driciru Annet, a market vendor in Moyo main market said they are confused on which weighing scale they are supposed to use. “We don’t know if this weighing scale is the right weighing scale because once they pick, they don’t return and they don’t tell us were the problem is if it’s not recommended, so it’s challenging,” Driciru stated.
A source who spoke on condition of anonymity accused the standards regulator of extorting money from them when the machines are faulty. “When they pick the weighing scale on claims of being faulty, they demand for 40,000 Ugandan shillings.”
According to Driciru Monica Moyo town council commercial officer, all the vendors are required to use the standard weighing scale for the measurement of goods and commodities not cups. “They sale goods to the community that they are supposed to use weighing scale which scales are to be standard approved by UNBS,” she said.
Monica further warned the vendors on the use of cups to measure goods for the customers because the cups may cheat the public as they are not standard.
However, Amegovu Dominic the commercial officer Moyo district local government had this clarity on the 5 standard approved weighing scale by UNBS.“The right weighing scales which they are supposed to use currently are around five, we have the Cond machine, the digital table top the one using stones, the spring balancing, and the crane.
