An intelligence-led operation by police in Moyo District has led to the arrest of an employee of the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) office in Moyo, who is accused of allegedly extorting money from clients seeking services.
The arrest follows complaints from National ID applicants, who accuse the suspect of soliciting 100,000 shillings from clients in exchange for services.
The suspect, identified as Womusi Gerald, 29, is an office attendant at the NIRA office in Moyo and is currently detained at Moyo Central Police Station.
One of the complainants, Kanyesigye Frank, commonly known as FK Brian, a resident of Central II in Moyo Town Council, says the suspect declined to process his request for a confirmation letter after he failed to raise the alleged 100,000 shillings.
Kanyasgye says he needed the confirmation letter to facilitate the registration of a business through a Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB), agent.
“He told me the confirmation letter would be printed and stamped from Kololo, Kampala, and that I must pay 100,000 shillings. He said the amount was mandatory for someone who wanted the service,” he said.
Another resident, Vuciri Dickens Sunday, from Lowi Quarters, says he failed to secure an opportunity in the recently concluded UPDF recruitment exercise due to a mismatch in his National ID details.
Vuciri says he was advised to update his details but was allegedly asked to pay 200,000 shillings, prompting him to seek clarification from the District Internal Security Officer, DISO.
According to the Moyo District Police Commander, the suspect was arrested while allegedly receiving money from one of the complainants.
The DPC says the suspect is expected to face charges of extortion and obtaining money by false pretense.
