OBONGI DISTRICT SAFE WATER COVERAGE STANDS AT 78%

Obongi district local government has registered steady improvement in safe water intake at household levels standing at 78 percent in the year 2025 compared to 36 percent in 2019.
 
This was revealed during the commemoration of the world water and environment day on Saturday March 22, 2025 in Palorinya Sub County.
 
Mr. Iranya Dominic the water officer for Obongi district in his report said, the district has registered a significant improvement but appealed to communities to own the water facilities.
 
“We have a challenge of poor ownership, we name call our pipe water system that this water system of better world, this borehole of LWF we call them names which is wrong. Let’s own our water facilities, nobody is going to take care of them.” Mr. Iranya said.
 
Mr. Okunzi Louis Drale the vice LC 5 chairperson while representing the district chairperson said, they are looking forward to motorized water systems.

“We are trying our best that all the villages have access to safe and clean water and also we are looking at shifting from boiled water sources to motorized water system to minimize cases of long distance movements.” Mr. Okunzi said.   
 
The celebration was also graced by partners supporting refugees in the settlement.
 
Mr. Jonathan Matata the settlement commandant in Palorinya had this appeal for ownership of the facilities.
 
“I ask our communities to own this facilities that have been established and any other facility that is within the settlement and outside the settlement.” He implored.
 
Matata added that the ownership of the facilities is on the local leadership to ensure that cases of vandalism are stopped.
 
Mr. Samuel Hashaka Mpimbaza the RDC obongi says 78 percent is a good score though more needs to be done.
 
“As it stands today it is at 78 percent which is a good score and the target is 85 percent meaning we still have a lot to do to achieve our target of 85 percent safe water coverage.” Mr. Mpimbaza emphasized.
 
Hon. Boka Didi George Obongi district MP appealed for increased budget for water and sanitation for its sustainability.
 
“We are marking this water day when we are finalizing the planning and budgeting of 2025/2026, what is the total budget of the district local government for water from the overall budget? When we are commemorating this day we, need to plan for resources.” Hon. Boka Didi appealed.   
 
Uganda celebrated the water and environment day under the theme water and environment resources for enhanced resilience and improved incomes and livelihoods.
