Stakeholders in Obongi district have decried the lack of a modern ultrasound scan and X-ray machines at Obongi Health Centre IV to detect pregnancy complications and guide prenatal care for both local population and refugees from south Sudan who depend on the facility for referral services.

Patients who require ultrasound scan and X-ray services are referred to integrated Itula Health Centre III in Itula Sub-county or to neighboring districts like Moyo, Adjumani, and Yumbe.

The Acting District Health Officer for Obongi HCVI Dominic Lomurecu disclosed that the ultrasound scan at Obongi Health Centre IV has been branded as an obsolete by atomic energy the body that oversees all electronic gadgets used by ministry of health.

“It cannot give us results, we need machines that can be used to assess, judge and prescribe medicine for that condition, as per now Obongi HCIV lacks a modern ultrasound scan but what we do is if there is a patient that requires scanning ,we have to do assessments weather this person needs the scan or not”.

The resident district commissioner of Obongi Mpimbaza Hasaka Samuel reported that, during his visit to Obongi HCIV a week ago he had witnessed a woman bleeding and died in the hands of the health workers due to lack of the machines to detect the cause of that condition.

“She died because the doctors and the midwives could not do much, blood flowing and they said if they had a scan they would have checked what was causing the excessive bleeding which lead to  her death, then with this kind of situation babies will continue to die in the facilities due to lack of equipment”.

The Chief Administrative Officer Otim Benson Humphrey says, the district authorities have already formally notified the Ministry of Health about the missing basic healthcare equipment. “We are making follow-ups because it’s necessary to have all these equipment to support the health system”.

An ultra sound scan machine is a medical imaging device that uses high frequency sound waves to produce images of the internal structures of the body.
