The mountain of garbage in Onzivu market.

By Sunday Amandi,

Arua city,

The vendors in Onzivu market, commonly known as Awindiri market in Ayivu division are disgruntled over the failure by Ayivu division to manage the garbage that has accumulated next to the market.

The vendors say the garbage has remained there for over a year, and it poses a health risk for them and their customers, and therefore demand for prompt action from the division to tackle the matter.

Lillian Acayo, one of the vendors explains how the garbage is affecting their businesses in the market,

“For one full year, we have not seen any grader coming to remove this garbage, we are not happy because the garbage affects the women, when it rains, maggots  flow towards the place where market women sit, our leaders should help us,” Lillian pleaded.

Doreen Apeliru, the head clerk in the market says, they have ever sent their concerns over the garbage to the division over the years in vein,

“The issue of this accumulated market has not just come yesterday or today, and we the market committees have been working tooth and nail to see that we push this issue of the garbage accumulation to our local leaders, I believe they had even taken this issue to Ayivu division, but since we raised this concern up to now, we have not seen any fruitful act been done on the garbage side,” Doreen confirmed.

However, the wait for the vendors and the customers may be extended, as the division is facing a hurdle in the efforts to clear the garbage,

Geoffrey Mugomba, the town clerk for Ayivu division says, their efforts have been derailed due to the collapse of the machine required for the work,

“We have been doing interventions by removing garbage, we could only remove a small portion given our resource envelope, we have taken some time, it is true without picking garbage from there, partly because we have had issues of budget lines, we have now allocated resources both fuel and allowances, however, we have been incapacitated because wheel loader is down, we are having a series of meetings, we are looking at a possibility of maybe hire of  the back hoe, or a wheel loader or excavator,” Geoffrey said.

The mountain of garbage is just close to the market, and it extends towards the market, as more of it keep on being added without it being reduced or cleared.
