The Oyam Town Council has embarked on a rigorous campaign to address poor sanitation by demolishing dilapidated kiosks and locking premises without sanitation facilities.
The operation began at Te-Aduku Trading Centre, Eastern Ward, where 12 houses were locked and one kiosk demolished due to lack of proper sanitation.
Authorities had issued warnings to the business community four months ago to implement facilities like toilets and rubbish pits.
Those affected include Jokene Geoffrey, Teke David, Angole Nixson, Odongo Moses, and Acut Patrick, all found to be operating businesses or renting houses without adequate sanitation.
Addressing the Te-Aduku community, Town Clerk Vicky Apio explained that the crackdown was necessitated by persistent non-compliance with sanitation guidelines.
LC3 Chairperson Stephen Okello Marisoni emphasized the operation’s importance in preventing sanitation-related diseases among residents.
Secretary of Health and Education, Daniel Ayoo, also revealed that contaminated pork was found being sold in one kiosk.
Tommy Opio, Chairperson of the local business community, acknowledged the operation as a wake-up call for other trading centers to prioritize sanitation.
However, LC1 Chairperson Alice Adong accused some members of the business community of indiscipline and resistance to sanitation efforts.
Future operations are planned for other trading centers, including Agoa Upper Centre, Pacu Dongo Idand, Acet Trading Centre, Widyang Otuto Aluk, and Puga, all identified for poor sanitation management
