The bishop of Arua Catholic Diocese, Rt Rev. Sabino Ocan Odoki, has called upon Christians across the diocese to join in all the church activities and practices throughout the holy week.
The Holy Week is an important time for Christians throughout the world and is the final week of Lent, which begins on Palm Sunday, the Sunday before Easter and during the Holy Week Christians gather to remember and participate in the Passion of Jesus Christ, Which is the final period of Christ’s life in Jerusalem.
While reading the holy week program for the diocese during an interview to radio Pacis the bishop challenges Christians to make real meaning of the holy week on all the days that lead to Easter when the resurrection of the lord is celebrated.
“From Wednesday, we shall be having special prayers, we starting with the chrism mass at Ediofe cathedral, which is also a day dedicated for the priests to renew their priestly promises. On Thursday, we have the holy Thursday mass or the mass of the last super which will be celebrated in our various parishes, chapels and zones. On good Friday, there will be way of the cross and veneration of the cross in all our parish churches. Meanwhile on Saturday (Holy Saturday), all the churches at parishes will hold the vigil mass which takes us to Easter and then on Sunday which will be the Easter, day I will be at the cathedral to preside over the mass at 10Am,” Bishop Odoki listed during the interview.
The bishop therefore appealed to the all Christians who are able to join in these programs across the diocese so that they can have a better and meaningful Easter celebrations.
The summit of the Liturgical Year in the Catholic Church is the Easter Triduum—from the evening of Holy Thursday to the evening of Easter Sunday. Though chronologically three days, they are liturgically one day unfolding for us the unity of Christ’s Paschal Mystery.
During the week there are noticeable changes that take place in the way churches are decorated. In many churches, statues and cross are covered in purple or black cloth, or simply remove the decor. Holy water is removed from the church and on Holy Saturday, the church bells remain silent until the Gloria at Easter Vigil.
