Persons with visual impairment are challenged to use their potentials for self-sustainability, as they can do pretty much everything a sighted person can, to create their own survival.
During a mobility training for the persons with visual impairment at the social center in Arua city, Victor Matata, the project coordinator of Uganda National Association of the blind urges the members to socialize themselves with the world.
“They should accept themselves the way they are as persons with visual impairment, such that they live socially with people, and ensure that they are put in the idea of “disability is not inability,” Victor said.
Richard Ombatia, the chairperson of Arua district association of the blind discourages the visually impaired persons from begging, but rather work for their wellbeing
“We have been training our members to at least do something for themselves, such that, they can earn a living,” said Richard.
Azabo Siraj from Madi Okollo district who got visual impairment at an adult stage testifies that, the visually impaired can do whatever others can do at ease.
“I got disability when I had started working on my own, I was fishing, when I became blind, I started thinking of how I could survive, I said no, my mind should be active to begin things that I was doing before, this time, I can go to the river and do fishing,” Siraj said.
People with visual impairment hold many of the same jobs as seeing people, it's possible for blind people to be teachers, doctors, retail workers, therapists, and more.
