Members of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) in West Nile are set to launch a regional campaign to endorse their leader, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, for the presidency in the 2031 general elections.
The regional endorsement drive is scheduled for Monday, September 14, 2026, at the Arua Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) grounds, starting at 10 a.m.
PLU leaders in West Nile say they want the region to take an early and leading role in mobilizing support for Gen. Muhoozi, who currently serves as Uganda’s Chief of Defense Forces.
The development follows the official launch of PLU’s national endorsement campaign on September 1, 2026, which is targeting 20 million signatures in support of Gen. Muhoozi’s proposed 2031 presidential bid.
West Nile is the first region to officially launch the endorsement campaign at the regional level.
Speaking to the media on Sunday ahead of the event, former Arua Central Division councillor and PLU West Nile coordinator, Hon. Atima Jackson Buti, said the campaign is driven by what he described as the region’s historical political marginalization and lack of political will.
Atima said West Nile should position itself at the forefront of the anticipated political transition. “When President Museveni took over power, we dragged our feet as a region. The entire Northern Uganda said ‘NO’, so Northern Uganda dragged behind. They allowed President Museveni’s government to serve other people because we turned our back on him. This time, under the new government of Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, West Nile must be number one,” Atima said.
PLU was established in February 2024 as a civic organization and has since been mobilizing support for Gen. Muhoozi’s political ambitions.
Judith Bako, the PLU regional publicity secretary, said the early endorsement campaign is intended to prepare for what she described as a peaceful transition and continuity of President Yoweri Museveni’s leadership beyond 2031.
“Uganda is not stopping in 2031. We are looking at what we can borrow from Mzee Museveni for the continuity of his experience as a patriot of this country. We are getting ready so that by 2031, the transition must be a peaceful one to Gen. Muhoozi,” Bako said.
Meanwhile, Obeta Moses Drakua, chairman of the central organizing committee for the regional endorsement, said the campaign is also intended to draw the attention of the anticipated next government to the challenges facing West Nile.
Obeta cited corruption and poor service delivery among the concerns that he said continue to affect the region. “We know how far Ugandans have suffered. We have seen the impact of corruption in this nation, particularly in West Nile. As the West Nile region, we are now getting set. We want to see the next government without stomachs. We must work for the population, and the population must achieve and change,” Obeta said.
The West Nile regional launch of the PLU endorsement campaign will take place at the Arua OPM grounds at 10 a.m. on September 14, 2026.
