PLU PUSHES FOR NATIONWIDE GRASSROOTS NETWORK TO FIGHT CORRUPTION, PROMOTE UNITY

NILE POST

The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) has announced plans to establish nationwide grassroots structures as it seeks to mobilise citizens around anti-corruption efforts, patriotism and national unity.

Speaking during the Eastern Regional Thanksgiving Ceremony for Minister of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives Sanjay Tanna in Mbale City, PLU Secretary General Fadil Twalla said the organisation is expanding its presence across the country to engage communities at the local level.

Twalla said PLU structures will be established in villages, parishes, sub-counties, districts and regions to promote civic awareness, accountability and patriotism.

“PLU is a civic organisation that is going to be a bridge between the population and government. We are going to have structures in all villages, all parishes, all sub-counties, districts and regions of this country,” he said.

He said the grassroots structures will play a key role in supporting the fight against corruption, which he described as one of the biggest obstacles to Uganda’s development.

“We are going to be the loudest voice against corruption because every shilling stolen from Uganda is stealing jobs from our youth and stealing the future of our children,” Twalla said.

The PLU official called on entrepreneurs and other Ugandans to support the organisation’s mobilisation drive, arguing that corruption continues to undermine businesses despite Uganda’s relative peace and stability.

Addressing Trade Minister Sanjay Tanna, Twalla said the business community expects strong leadership from him because of his experience as an entrepreneur and his understanding of challenges facing investors.

He urged the minister to remain vigilant against corruption within the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, saying the ministry plays a critical role in Uganda’s economic transformation agenda.

Twalla also defended government wealth creation initiatives, including the Parish Development Model (PDM), Emyooga and the Youth Livelihood Programme, urging citizens to embrace the programmes and use the funds productively.

He argued that proper management of the funds can help transform household incomes and support local businesses.

The PLU Secretary General said Uganda’s peace and security provide a foundation for economic growth and urged citizens to protect those gains through patriotism, discipline and accountability.

The planned rollout of PLU structures marks an attempt by the organisation to deepen its grassroots presence and expand its civic mobilisation activities across the country.

However, the announcement comes amid questions over how PLU intends to distinguish its approach from existing institutions already mandated to promote accountability and fight corruption, including the Inspectorate of Government, Office of the Auditor General, State House Anti-Corruption Unit and local government accountability structures.

Observers will be watching whether PLU’s proposed network will complement existing anti-corruption efforts or introduce new approaches capable of addressing Uganda’s long-standing governance challenges.
