Police in Alebtong District are holding a Local Council 1 chairperson accused of killing his wife on the allegation that she was cheating with another man.

Jimmy Ogwal Jimmy, 41 years old, Chairperson LC1 of Abiloyenyo village, Adwiri Parish, Adwiri sub-county in Alebtong District, reportedly killed his wife Immaculate Apio, 36 years old, from the same village on October 6, 2024.

It is alleged that on October 6, 2024, at around 12.30 hours, Ogwal assaulted his wife Apio Immaculate using a turbine belt of a grinding machine and some wood leaving Apio unconscious following a long domestic misunderstanding between them.

The Chairperson LC3 of Adwiri sub-county Richard Emuna reported that on the fateful day, Ogwal had rumors that his wife Apio was in a relationship with one Okello Bonny from a bar where they were drinking. ‘’we suspect that Ogwal must have acted in annoyance which was uncalled for,’’ Emuna said.

Patrick Jimmy Okema, the North Kyoga Police Spokesperson said a case of murder by assault has been registered in Alebtong Central Police Station.

“Police visited Scene of crime, examined and documented. Exhibits of broken table and rubber turbine belt was recovered. The body was taken to Alebtong Health Centre 4 pending a post-mortem. Jimmy Ogwal was traced and later arrested and now detained at CPS where investigation is going on,”Okema said.

Okema also appeals to couples to always part ways peacefully without injuring their spouse.

“This is a very strong message to our people because most times we have seen this happen. Instead of killing your spouse, you allow your spouse to move peacefully and go and start a new life. In this way, it may help because most of these cases happen when a lot of intervention has been made without yielding fruits,” Okema adds.

In Uganda, the legal implications for a case involving the alleged murder of a spouse are quite serious. The accused would likely face charges of murder under the Penal Code Act. If found guilty, the punishment can be severe, including life imprisonment.
