POWER BACKUP CHALLENGE RAISES CONCERN AHEAD OF CAST PLUS TB INTERVENTION IN MOYO

Moyo District Health Department is set to carry out a routine CAST PLUS TB intervention in tuberculosis hotspot areas, aimed at increasing TB case detection across the district.
However, laboratory technicians are raising a concern over inadequate power backup to run TB samples on GeneXpert machines.
According to the technicians, the power backup challenge was raised for consideration as early as July, but no action has yet been taken to address the problem.
Anyanzo Matthias Emmanuel, the Moyo District Laboratory Focal Person, raised the concern during a planning meeting held at the District Health Office Resource Centre.
He says the GeneXpert machine is facing challenges due to the lack of reliable power backup needed to run samples, calling for the issue to be addressed to ensure the intervention is effectively implemented.
Relatedly, Asigaci Abraham, the Laboratory Manager at Moyo General Hospital, says despite having the necessary human resources to operate the GeneXpert machine, fluctuations in the national power grid remain a major challenge.
“We are all aware that our power in Moyo is not constant, there is need for power backup to easy running GeneXpert in the lab” he said
Meanwhile, Amaseku Kizito, the HUB Coordinator at Moyo General Hospital, says they have informed Green Power, the service provider, after identifying faults with the power backup system. “I tried switching to national grid it was total off unable to run the machine,” he added.
The routine CAST PLUS TB intervention is expected to take place in September and October in five selected health facilities include; Moyo General Hospital, Logoba, Dufile, Lefori, and Laropi.
