Poultry farmers in West Nile are now at an advantage as prices of chicken feeds have come down compared to the previous prices.
Poultry feeds is often composed of a blend of grains, hay, and legumes. Grains derived from crops such as corns, wheat, and oats are commonly used.
The availability and cost of maize and soybean meal generally determines feed cost.
At Omia agribusiness, prices of these feeds have come down and this creates an opportunity for the poultry farmers.
Paul Drandua, an animal health nutrition officer with Omnia agribusiness explained the current situation, “A kilogram of starter is 3000 shillings, but if you buy a sack of 50 kilograms, its soled at 145,000 shillings, a kilogram of grower malt is 2,900 shillings, 50 kilogram is sold at 138,000 shillings, currently there is some drop in prizes because they used to be high, we used to sale starter at 150,000 shillings and this has dropped by 5000 shillings,” Paul said.
Brian Habib, who works with celavie, confirms that, the current prices are suitable for the farmers.
“The prizes are not all that bad, starter is 135,000 shillings, grower is 120,000 shillings, and then finisher is 115,000 shillings that is for broilers,” Brian said.
Poultry feeds plays a crucial role in poultry farming, significantly impacting the health, growth, and productivity of the birds.
But according to Brian Amagule, the current prices are still high compared to the previous ones and says, there is need for poultry farmers to set their prizes as a team.
Poultry feeds are formulated to provide all the essential nutrients required by the birds for their growth, reproduction, and overall health.
