The prime minister of the republic of Uganda Rt. Hon Robinah Nabbanja has promised to support moyo district local government to get a municipality status if the ban on creation of new administrative units is lifted.

This follows the request made by moyo district local government chairperson Hon. Anyama Williams during the belated women’s day celebration on Saturday March 15, 2025 at Otce Sub County.

Hon. Williams Anyama the district chairperson said moyo district existed before Uganda’s independence therefore deserves the opportunity of been lifting in to a municipality.

“Moyo is older than its mother Uganda, moyo became a district before Uganda became independent, and all the age mates are now cities and municipalities. We are kindly requesting your office to grant Moyo town council a municipality status.” Hon. Anyama requested.

Currently moyo district has seven sub counties and three town councils.

Hon. Dulu Samuel the Local Council 3 chairperson in his remarks asked for support for construction of Otce Sub County headquarters.

“We have been renting for the last four years and the cost of renting has become so expensive, possibly if the government of Uganda can allocate and construct a new sub county headquarter, it will be to the interest of the people of Otce Sub County.” Hon. Dulu asked.

However, in response Rt. Hon Robinah Nabbanja the prime minister of the republic of Uganda pledged to support the district to be elevated to a municipality.

“The elevation of moyo town council to municipality, you know there is ban on elevation of administrative units as directed by the president so we are waiting and he is about to open the ban so when he opens you have your vibrant here, your brother here definitely moyo will benefit.” Rt. Hon Nabbanja promised.

On 2nd of February 2024 in a district council meeting, Moyo district local government council approved the proposal to elevate moyo town council in to a municipal status now awaiting decisions from the ministry of local government.
