Children on October 3, 2026 took center stage at the Go Green Kids’ Festival organized by Radio Pacis at the O.P.M Grounds in Arua city. The festival aims at educating children about environmental protection and encourage them to adopt practices that promote a cleaner and healthier community.

Through games, music, educational activities, and interaction, children were being taught that environmental conservation is not only the responsibility of adults but also requires the involvement of young people.

Christabel Fosca Awekonimungu, a parent encouraged parents to support their children in tree planting, “in my opinion, I think parents should encourage children in cleaning the environment like on weekends, and then planting like flowers because it also adds on the green in the environment,” she said.

The festival also provides an opportunity for parents, teachers, and community members to reinforce environmental messages at home, schools, and in communities.

Joel Akusha Dralumani, Deputy Head Teacher of St. Kizito Ediofe Orphans Primary School, explained how environmental conservation can be integrated into classroom learning.

“One way schools can reinforce the Go green environmental conservation program can be through integration of this program in lesson. It’s not that we should only have it here, when we go to class, especially social studies (SST) the element of environmental conservation must be a key point. Emphasis on tree plantation, maintenance of green environment, management of plastics especially about disposing them,” he said.

Sarah Colok, a Primary Seven candidate at spring’s Primary School, said the festival offered her refreshment from examination pressure. She also encouraged fellow pupils to avoid improper disposal of plastic bottles.

“I enjoyed dancing, actually why I came here, I came to refresh my mind, I’m in P.7, always having stress so I just come to refresh my mind. I will encourage children to stop throwing things like polythene bags and plastic material in the environment,” she advised.

Monsignor Charles Idraku, Director of Radio Pacis, highlighted the important role children play in environmental conservation.

“I am glad to be part of this go green kids festival with a special forces on planting trees for children and also re-cycling plastics as a critical thing as we know of course children play very important role and they are the real future and if we educate them at an early age the importance of conservation of environment and planting of trees, keeping away plastics we should re-cycle them so that they can be re-used,” he remarked.

The festival uses enjoyable and participatory activities to teach proper waste disposal, hygiene, tree protection, and care for natural resources. It emphasizes that small actions by children can contribute to meaningful environmental change.
