REFUGEE LEADERS TO SENSITISE YOUTHS ON SAFETY DURING FESTIVITIES

Refugee youth leaders in base camp zone,  Palorinya refugee settlement Obongi district  are setting out various plans and activities to control the youth from the unnecessary up and down movements during the festive season with aims of protecting them from dangerous happenings.
 
Uncle Kawaja a youth mentor in base camp zone said they have plans to carry out routine community awareness, dialogues and activities that can bring the youths together.
“We are planning to gather so that we can give very key information that can make them to be safe during this season because when it’s the festive season, you will find that there are a lot of things happening” Kawaja pointed.
 
He added that if they are not guided, a lot of cases will happen. These can be teenage pregnancies and accidents especially when they move at night for discos.  
    
Akowora Peter, one of the peer educators in Ibao village, said, they are planning to mobilize youths at the facility where they are going to be empowering them on health education.
 
“We have a youth corner at the facility where we normally discuss health issues and also create awareness on teenage pregnancy and other sexually transmitted diseases,” he added.
   
On the side of the girl child, Jenifer Atila one of the community leader in Ibao village urged parents to have regular meetings with their daughters telling them the risks of the night movement.
 
“Parents should sit down with their children to have meetings with, them telling them about the dangers of moving at night for discos,” Jenifer noted.
 
She further encouraged them to better sit down read their book at home instead of the up and down movements.
“This is the reasonability of both parents as they are at home we have to advise our children so that they will be able to go back to school by next year,” she added.
 
A head of every festive season, the settlement is filled up with happening activities especially in the nights as this has led to high rates of teenage pregnancies and accidents among other issues.
