In a harrowing twist of event, more than 70 primary school pupils from different schools across Ndhew sub-county, Nebbi district have been struck by lightning on Wednesday July 31, 2024. The pupils converged for inter-school football competition at Oweku Primary School.
Lightning struck when the pupils were taking shelter in one of the classrooms following a heavy Wednesday afternoon downpour, according to local leaders.
Wilson Odwokacen, the Head teacher of Owilu Primary school confirmed the incident saying, "76 pupils from different schools across the sub county have been rushed to Oweku Health center II".
He added that “out of the 76, seven pupils including a female teacher of Owilu Primary School identified as Rose Ayio, have been critically injured and rushed to Nebbi general hospital". Others were later discharged from Oweku health center II after receiving first aid.
The LCIII Chairperson of Dhew Sub-County Bosco Okway said no death has been recorded yet. He regrets the incident blaming most school administrators for failing to install lightning arrestors on their building.
He called upon the District leadership to ensure all schools have lightning arrestors as preventive measure given the torrential rain the area is experiencing.
Lightning incidents have been common especially in schools across greater Nebbi and there has been repeated calls to school administrators to install lightning arrestors.
