A motorcycle rider and his passenger were both crushed to death as they attempted to overtake a truck in the afternoon of December 23, at Yivu village, Ombavu Parish, Arivu Sub-County, and Arua District.
The blue Mercedes Benz lorry with registration number UBH 753H, driven by a 34 -year-old Khalid Kakoza, a resident of Kasubi in Kampala.
The deceased who were riding on an unregistered Senke motorcycle were only identified as Adomati 30, and Dratu, both from Ondivu village, Olupi Parish.
The Police Spokesperson for West Nile region SP Collins Asea in a statement, attributed the incident to reckless riding by the rider, highlighting how the two were crushed after they slid under the truck, attempting to overtake the lorry.
“A blue Mercedes-Benz lorry, registration number UBH 753H, driven by Mr. Kakoza Khalid, a 34-year-old resident of Kasubi.A numberless red Senke motorcycle, ridden by Mr. Adromati, a male approximately 30 years old, with a passenger, Mr. Dratu, 32 years old, both from Ondivu village, Olupi Parish” Asea explained
He added that, “Initial investigations suggest that the motorcycle attempted to overtake the lorry from the left side, lost control, and slid under the vehicle. This resulted in the rear tyre of the lorry running over the motorcycle and its riders. The lorry driver stopped at a distance but was subjected to an assault by members of the public before being rescued by police. The accident is attributed to reckless riding by the motorcycle operator”
The bodies have been conveyed to Arua City Mortuary for autopsy, as investigation is underway.
Road users have been urged to exercise caution and observe traffic regulations to avoid such tragic incidents.
