A woman has triggered uproar, upon giving birth and immediately dumping the baby into a pit latrine in the wee hours of Monday November 18, 2024 at Patek west village, Mundel Parish, Nyapea Sub-County, Zombo district.

Believed to be in her 20s, the Woman has been only identified as Kwiocwiny, a resident of Patek west village, who was staying at her father's home.

The lifeless body of the baby girl was retrieved on Monday morning by local leaders and community members.

The leaders suspect she gave birth to the baby girl late Sunday night, before dumping her at their home pit latrine.

The incident shot its way to spotlight, after community upon subjecting her to a serious questions on what happened to her pregnancy, she revealed that she dumped the baby in a pit latrine.

The LCI chairperson of Patek west village, Francis Oryema confirmed the horrifying incident, adding that the body of the baby has been retrieved and handed over to the family members.

Oryema also stated that the woman has no mental illness and she never disclosed why she performed the harrowing act against an innocent child.

"We woke up today to a shocking news where by a lady called Kwiocwiny, a resident of this village yesterday evening, gave birth to live baby girl and later dumped it in their pit latrine" Oryema told Radio Pacis in an interview.

He added “community put much pressure on her and later she revealed that she dumped the baby in a pit latrine, we dismantled the latrine and indeed discovered the lifeless body deep down."

An eyewitness said “we even saw the fetus inside the toilet, with its placenta and umbilical cord still attached"

The council speaker of Nyapea Sub-County also the area councillor of Mundel Parish Eliot Odongo, described the incident as unfortunate, and calls for “appropriate ways of solving family misunderstandings instead of punishing innocent children."

By press time, police were yet to visit the scene of crime.

Relatedly,  early this year, a woman also dumped her  baby in a nearby bush in  Mundel Parish, Nyapea Sub-County, but fortunately, the child was discovered  later after spending a night  in the nearby  bush, when immense pressure was exerted on the mother by members of the community.

Some stakeholders say such practices are being exacerbated  by family misunderstandings, lack of parental responsibilities, entrenched cultural and patriarchal beliefs, attitudes and norms towards children and women, gender based violence amongst others.
