Authorities and experts have provided valuable tips to the general public on how to stay safe on the road and reduce accidents in 2025.
According to their advice, the public needs to adhere to traffic rules, wearing seat belts, avoiding speeding, and not driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Senior driver Daniel Odongo highlighted the need for drivers to follow speed limits and practice defensive driving.
Odongo noted that the main reason for road accidents is mostly carelessness on the road and not respecting what is required to use the road.
‘’My advice to you, you have to be self-respecting because anyone on the road, they are victims. Avoid over-speeding. Focus on your windscreen and your side mirror to avoid accidents,’’ Odongo said.
Kalungi Fred Kabuye, an educator with the National Drug Authority, also urged road users to avoid using the road while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
‘’We need to keep ourselves safe. As a driver, stay calm while you're on the road. Secondly, don't drink and drive. Don't use drugs and substances. Make sure you get enough rest before you take a long journey because that will help you, not doze while driving. Life is lived once. Once lost, you can't regain it. And other users' lives also matter,’’ Kalungi said.
Equally, Irene Chelangat, the North Kyoga Regional Traffic Officer (RTO), encouraged pedestrians to stay vigilant and make road safety a priority.
She advised pedestrians to use designated crossing points and wear reflective clothing at night to enhance their visibility.
‘’To the pedestrians. As we walk on these roads, we always face oncoming traffic. Because in case of anything, you can make a judgment. Then another thing as a pedestrian, before you cross the road, always check left, right. If it is clear, cross the road. As a pedestrian, we always advise to put on a reflecting cloth, especially at night, for the riders or drivers to see you. We urge people to be self-disciplined,’’ Chelangat said.
