In a serious crackdown on saboteurs of Parish Development model, leaders in Nebbi District led by the Assistant Resident District Commissioners, Olama Stephen Clay and Mr. Owachgiu Donald have confirmed the arrest of two PDM SACCO leaders over reported extortion.
The two whose identities were not disclosed by press time include the chairperson and secretary of a PDM SAACO in Lee Village, Kucwiny Sub-County.
It’s alleged that the two currently in detention, extorted Shs 120,000 each from yet to be disclosed number of beneficiaries in the area prompting swift action from leaders.
In a statement signed by two Assistant Resident District Commissioners Nebbi, the arrests serve as a warning to other SAACO leaders perpetuating similar unlawful practices.
"We in Nebbi are continuing with supervision and monitoring of PDM program and money. The 2 arrested today are Chairman and Secretary PDM SACCO of Lee village in Kucwiny Sub-county for extortion of Shs 120.000 from each beneficiary. This we can't tolerate in NRM". The statement adds that “the other PDM SACCO leaders in other sub counties should take note"
Lately, greater Nebbi leaders have intensified operation against saboteurs of Parish Development model marred with extortion of would-be beneficiaries by some SACCO leaders and Parish chiefs respectively.
Recently, the Resident District Commissioner of Pakwach Paul Eseru netted some SACCO leaders over extortion, similarly, some leaders were recently arrested in Kango Sub county Zombo District by the office of the RDC headed by Grace Atim.
Government introduced Parish development model as one of its robust Poverty eradication programmes aimed at transforming lives of 39 percent of Ugandans rooted in subsistence to money economy.
Notwithstanding its progress, the initiative has been marred with allegations of extortion, nepotism, selective approach by SACCO leaders among others.
