Parents in West Nile region are called to support their children in developing their talents, so as to benefit from it in future.

This appeal was made in second edition of the West Nile Rural Electrification Company, WENRECO sprint run in Bariffa stadium in Arua city on Saturday, August 24, 2024.

Kiwa Faustino, the treasurer of the Uganda athletics federation says, every talent begins small, and needs time and support to develop, “It takes time to identify and nurture, who will be the king or queen starts now, they are on the right path, it’s a beginning and we need to build on the bricks they have laid, and we are going to make reviews to make sure, this one does not die,” Kiwa said.

Shida Lenia, a professional athlete and an Olympian, who was in attendance, encouraged the young people in the region to make maximum use of such opportunities, as there is a lot of young talent in the region, “An so impressed with the activity because it’s a form of talent identification, it’s something as West Nile we have been lacking so it means a lot to us, we have really talented athletes here in West Nile, and if we really have time and we put energy in to these athletes, we shall get a lot of athletes in the National podium and the international podium,” Lenia said.

The purpose of organizing the run is to identify and develop talent.

Kenneth Kigumba, the general manager of WENRECO admits that, the performance this year was more impressive than the one last year, “The objective is of course to identify athletics talent in West Nile, last year we managed to identify some exceptional fallers who we worked with and we are seeing progress this year, we have performed better than the one in last year, the main agenda is to get individuals who can meet the Uganda athletics federation standards for qualification to compete at National level, but if it turns out that the times recorded by the athletes do not measure up to the standards we expect, then we will have no option but to organize another sprint run before this year ends,” Kigumba said.

Those who signed were given awards and trophies at the closure of the event.
