Westnile women’s network organization have called for support to girls and end stigma and ensure access to safe, affordable menstrual care for women, and girls who menstruate.

As the world commemorated Menstrual Hygiene Day on May 28, the women led organization has re-echoed the need to promoting of good menstrual hygiene management at a global level.

Lillian Nakiwombo from Melisa plan children foundation stressed the need for increased awareness about menstrual hygiene in schools.

“Most of these girls don’t know about periods so we need to spread this, go to schools tell girls about menstruation so they need to know and be ready, tell them that going into menstruation doesn’t mean that you’re ready for marriage other fear that boys will laugh at them so we need to talk to boys so they support us.”
Anzoa Sarah the president of Memprow says there is need for giving in-depth education about menstruation.

“Menstrual education should also be a sustainability plan to ensure that we  address menstruation challenges but also solve a global challenge around  menstruation that means the information we should be giving girls in school should be detailed, they should be understanding menstruation not just only as an issue of nature but also as an issue of health,” Sarah noted.

Nsubuga Shafik Kigongo from Assorted trains Africa encourages men to support girls to end the stigma around menstruation. “I believe that if we hold so much power in the society and its where those harmful practices are coming from I believe that if we are involved we can shatter those stereotypes  we can address those harmful norms so it’s not only a women’s agenda but it also a men’s  Agenda.”

Menstrual Hygiene Day, observed annually on May 28, is dedicated to breaking taboos and raising awareness about the importance of good menstrual hygiene management, this year, the day has been organized under the theme “Together for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld” aimed to educate, empower, and transform the conversation around menstrual health.
