A dramatic scene unfolded yesterday evening at around 6:30pm near Ediofe Cathedral forest in Komite ward when a youth, believed to be in his 20s from Ociba coast in Arua City, only identified as Anguzu was nearly lynched by an angry mob after attempting to snatch a phone from an unsuspecting pedestrian.
According to Kilian, the victim of the attempted phone snatching, the young man confessed that he was driven to desperation due to an accumulated credit debt owed to his boss. ”
This incident happened when I was trying to go and take my sister’s receipt from Ediofe girls’ primary school and the guy told me that his boss was demanding payment, and that’s why he tried to snatch my phone,” Kilian recounted.
But the timely intervention of the LC 1 Chairman of Jiako-yia cell, Dawa John saved the life of the young man from the clutches of the irate mob.
However, the Chairman was critical of the security personnel’s response to the incident. “They took too long to arrive, and they were also demanding for fuel” he lamented.
A woman who witnessed the incident emphasized the need for parental responsibility in preventing such occurrences. “Parents should educate their children and instill good values in them. This would help curb such issues,” she advised.
The young man’s fate remains uncertain as the angry mob said , his close call with death serves as a cautionary tale for would-be offenders in Arua city and a call to action for community leaders and law enforcement agencies.
