ZOMBO COUNCILLORS CALL FOR SENSITIZATION AGAINST SALE OF GOVERNMENT JOBS

Councillors in Zombo District have recommended massive sensitization of locals, to address the allegations of sale of government jobs in the district.

Zombo district Councillors under social services committee, tabled the recommendation in a recent presentation of the first quarter performance report for 2024/25 financial year at Zombo District headquarters.

Sadiki Onencan, the Councillor for Paidha town council, also the  District chairperson social services committee,  placed concerns about the wide spread allegations of sale of government jobs in Zombo.

Onencan, called for intensified sensitization and reporting of such cases to Authorities to curtail the deep-seated vice with far-reaching implications.

“On allegations that jobs are being sold in Zombo, the committee recommends massive community  sensitization be done by all  the key stakeholders, that Jobs in Zombo are not for sale  and anybody doing that should be reported to the RDC, LCV, CAO or any District Councillors near you,” Onencan said.

He added, “Notice should be put in all public places informing people that jobs in Zombo are not for sale. Members everywhere people are saying that it is much easier to get jobs in Zombo so long as you have your money, whether you qualify or you don’t qualify so long as you have your money, getting jobs in Zombo is much easier.”

David Bithum, the district Councillor of Abanga Sub-County, urged the district leadership, to swiftly act on the allegations, to “clean the name of the district service commission”

Meanwhile Nasis Binwengi, the workers representative at the district council and the chairperson finance committee defended the recommendation of community sensitization, adding it’s a preventive measure.

“People of Kampala, everywhere they are all complaining about us, if there is truly buying and other things, the council is simply taking a precautionary measure, first it destroys the name of our own employees and the council , this issue even came before the deputy IGG when she came here,” Binwengi explained.
This weighty allegations about sale of government jobs, is coming at a time when the district is in the recruitment process of several employees in different positions.

Responding to allegations about sale of government jobs in Zombo, District LCV chairperson James Oruna Oyullu, advised Councillors to be tabling evidence based recommendations not hearsays.

“So about allegations that people are selling jobs, right now we are in the process of recruitment, committee when your recommending something, it should be evidence-based not hearsays, people are selling jobs is being said everywhere, not only in Zombo, even the ministry is concerned, if you have the evidence, you have the pictures of somebody taking money, avail us with the evidence,” Oyullu noted

Sam Kumakech, an aspirant for Okoro County MP seat, while announcing his 2026 bid in a press conference at Daudi Cotts, made his strong stance and called for thorough investigation on allegations of sale of government jobs in Zombo.

Festus Ayikobua, the resident district commissioner of Zombo last week highlighted high corruption in Zombo, publicly stating that, “some of your children are the one failing this district.”

He assured community of stamping out corrupt leaders in Zombo, calling for cordial working relationship and collaboration with the community.

Between 2020 and 2022, the IG Directorate of Ombudsman Affairs, received a total of over 225 cases regarding the breaches in the recruitments handled by the district service commission nationwide.

The inspectorate of Government Ms Betty Kamya, recently said IG has investigated numerous complaints of sale of government jobs at the local government level and some of the culprits have been apprehended.

“Selling public jobs is an injustice which denies a person of merit the opportunity to serve this country. It results in great danger of littering the public service with human resource of low caliber leading to incompetence, loss of public funds, poor service delivery and poverty,” Ms Kamya said.

Recently, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, tore through District Service Commissions department nationwide, over taking bribes and sexually exploiting young girls in exchange for government jobs, and rallied Ugandans to table evidence to bring the perpetrators to book.
