Gunmen from a religious sect have stormed a prison in DR Congo’s capital Kinshasa, freeing their leader and about 50 other prisoners.

Shots were fired and vehicles burnt when the gang stormed the jail. Police are suspected to have shot dead several prisoners.

An eyewitness claims to have seen Red Cross officials loading bodies of the dead prisoners into vehicles. The self-styled prophet and the leader of an outlawed group, seeking to revive the ancient Kongo kingdom was arrested, along with his three wives and son, in March following clashes between his supporters and police.

The Former chemistry professor at the University of Kinshasa claims to have received a revelation from the “Archangel of the Kongo”, to lead the Bundu dia Kongo movement, which is campaigning to restore a monarchy in parts of DR Congo, Congo-Brazzaville, Angola and Gabon.

He was an MP when he was arrested after security forces besieged his home for two weeks for allegedly inciting violence.END
