The Diocese of Madi-West Nile has pledged for continuous collaboration with local governments and community within the diocese to plant more trees and protect environment.

For 7-years now, the diocese observes environment week in the month of March with main focus of sensitizing community on importance of protecting environment and planting trees, this is climaxed by Tree Sunday in third week of the month.

The Bishop of Diocese of Madi-West Nile, Rt. Rev. Charles Collins Andaku reaffirms commitment of the diocese to environment protection. “What we do in the diocese is basically to compliment the government effort in greening the country. It is our responsibility as a church to lead by example, (because) God has a plan for us as far as environment is concerned” the Bishop states.

He was addressing Journalists in a press briefing after official launch of the Tree Sunday where the diocese was joined by students, community and organizations in cleaning exercise.

Head of Department for Household and Community Transformation at the diocese, Jesca Mungulemi, attributes success of their environment programs to team work. “This cleaning exercise and the Tree Sunday are not one-stop, it is a continuous journey because we want to see our diocese green” she said.

A student of Mvara Secondary School, Phiona Nyamutoro hopes to educate her colleagues to ensure they make their contribution in planting trees.

However, a resident of Mvara Ward, Dr. Jacob Angualuga challenge community members to play their part in protecting environment by always keeping it clean.
The diocese has so far plated trees on more than 300 acres of land in different archdeaconries. This year’s Tree Sunday is marked under the theme: Trees, My Livelihood.
