Office bearers in various capacities have been implored to desist from corruption tendency that has hit Uganda if the meaning of 62 years of independence is to have a meaning.
This call was made by Apostle Fr David Ongom, while giving his sermon at Uganda Martyrs Cathedral Church -Lira on Wednesday during the mass to celebrate 62 years of independence of Uganda.
Fr Ongom said the 62 years of Uganda’s independence should make all its citizens ask themselves whether they are patriotic to their country Uganda or they are the very people who are spoiling its image to the other world. “What am I doing as a Ugandan to transform this country, to make it a good place for every brother and sister of mine who is a Ugandan? As Ugandans, let us try our level best to live a good life. So let us pray today for our nation that God may help our nation to remain united,”Ongom said.
In the same way, Sheikh Yusuf Balinda Mohammed the Supreme Khadi of Greater Lango, Muslim District in his independence message cautioned people in public offices indulging in corruption to repent to God before it is late.
According to Yusuf, much as Uganda has achieved a lot since 1962, its impacts are very minimal because some office bearers divert what the government has planned for its citizen for selfish gain
“The biggest challenge we are facing now is corruption. If there were no corruption, we would be very, very, very far, but a lot of public funds are being squandered. That is why we don't feel these developments I'm talking about. Then I'm also requesting the leaders who God has bestowed upon leadership to know that they are accountable before God,” Bulinda said.
Meanwhile, Robson Otyang, a political analyst in Lango urges Ugandans to use the 62 years of independence to reflect on where they have reached as a Country and forge the way forward. “Are we contented with the level we are at? Should we now sustain it? Or there's need for us to put in more effort to reach another desired level of life? What lessons have we learned from the experience we have gone through? How can we avoid it? And so that gives us a reflection and for the way forward,” Otyang said.
Meanwhile, Bonny Ferdinand Okello Alele, the assistant City commissioner of Lira noted that the National Resistance Movement party magnified the level of Development in Uganda. “Under this NRM government we boost of peace, improved infrastructure, education, health and improved economy among others. This is a milestone that is brought by NRM and we commit to keep improving on some areas that lag behind,” Okello said.
