A candidate from Okubani Primary in Yumbe district, Mary Kaku, 16, a refugee did not sit for the 2024 Primary Leaving Examinations after delivering through a caesarian section.

Ms. Flora Ayakaka the head teacher of the school said they visited the candidate a day earlier and she promised that she would sit for the exams. “We prepared the girl ready to sit for the PLE but unfortunately, her labor started at 1:00am on Wednesday. The girl was taken to Okubani health Centre III but she couldn’t be managed at the facility and consequently, she was referred to Yumbe Regional Referral Hospital,” she said.

She said, the girl was operated on and the information they got from the hospital indicates that the girl needs about six hours to rest, meaning the girl has now missed the exams.

Mr. John Angulibo the District Inspector of Schools says, it was very unfortunate incident that has happened.
“Life takes priority compared to the examinations. We have nothing to do to address this matter but the only thing is that the girl shouldn’t lose hope and has a chance to sit next year,’’ he said.

Dr. Patrick Odong the director Yumbe Regional Referral Hospital said, they got a mother who was referred to them for further management because she was not able to deliver at the lower health facility of Okubani.

He said after the assessment of the mother by the medical personnel at the facility, she was recommended for an operation which has been done and the outcome is good but she can’t therefore go and sit for her PLE.

“For the operation to be done, the mothers are given medication such that they can sleep for the operation to take place but there are others administered after the operation. This therefore can’t allow the mother to go out to sit for her PLE and she needs to rest for more than six hours,’’ he said.

He said, the baby and the mother are doing well at the facility but they will be discharged at an appropriate time.
