The ongoing national examinations under the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) for the senior four candidates in Arua city has registered mixed progress on day one of the examinations.
Most of the schools visited in arua city have confirmed that UNEB’s key directives for the 2026 UCE written exams have been observed although some schools registered delayed commencement in the morning papers besides absenteeism by students.
Brother Robert Okello, the head teacher of Bishop Angello Tarantino Memorial SS confirmed that; “All the question papers were enough, the invigilators came timely and they organized students well and everything was well arranged, we started on time. We registered one hundred and eighty and all of them have come, they are sitting for the examinations. They are well composed and discipline wise, there’s no problem.”
Of the 438 registered students at Arua Public secondary school, only three male students did not turn out for the papers. Nelson Onzima the director of studies of the school confirmed this to the media;
“We registered 438 candidates and 435 of them have turned for this examination. We have three absentees. the other two, we have not got any valid reasons from them or their parents but there’s one who left us a little bit early , we are not sure whether he registered in another school or left like the other two.” Onzima said.
Meanwhile at Arua secondary school where only one female student suspected to have gotten married missed the exams out of the 270 students head teacher Rashid Anguzu acknowledged the delayed commencement today, noting that no other challenges were registered;
“given the big numbers, being the first day and being the first paper, there was a slight delay which was just by 15 minutes otherwise there wasn’t serious challenge.” Rashid noted.
Some candidates who shared their experiences after the first paper today had hopes of better returns;
“They have being guiding us and at the end of it we are hoping that we don’t disappoint them. We have being for the first paper and it was well done” says a student at Arua Public SS.
“This time around at least if someone fails this paper that is, the person was not revising” Another student expressed.
The candidates sat for Mathematics paper one in the morning and chemistry theory in the afternoon today and tomorrow Tuesday, they will be taking English language paper 1 in the morning while history and political education in the afternoon.
