The Police in West Nile region have arrested and detained a woman on allegation of torturing a minor in Lezoo village, Logiri Sub County in Arua district.
It's alleged that the suspect, Ms Zainabu Ayikoru, 45, a resident of the same village allegedly burnt the fingers of the five year old girl and also a pupil (names withheld) who had been under her care.
It has been established that, Ms Ayikoru in May 2023 requested custody of the child from her brother, Mr. Benard Elima who is residing in Madi Okollo District.
According to Mr. Collins Asea, the Acting regional Police Spokesperson for West Nile, Ms Ayikoru last week reportedly found the child had taken food and sauce without permission, which prompted her to burn the child's fingers as punishment.
Mr Asea says, upon learning of the incident, the police immediately opened a case under reference GEF 010/2024, "A team of detectives and uniformed personnel visited the scene to gather evidence and the victim has been taken to Logiri Health Center for medical examination and treatment. The suspect Ms.Ayikoru has been arrested and is currently in police custody as investigations continue," he said.
''The Uganda Police Force takes incidents of child abuse and torture very seriously. There are many ways of disciplining a child for example reward method but torture is not one of them," he added.
He encouraged the communities to report any signs of abuse promptly to the authorities to prevent such events.
