Despite the fact that all political parties are gearing up for the coming of the local council elections in Uganda, the National Unity Platform, NUP party coordinator for Yumbe district, Siraji Angulibo is under police custody after being arrested from his working place on Thursday 19th October 2023.

Speaking to the deputy vice president for northern Uganda who also doubles as the party coordinator for the region, Habib Asega said, “We are not aware about the reason he was arrested but he was picked by people with plain clothes yesterday from his work place in Yumbe.”

Ignatius Dragudu, the police public relations officer for North North West Nile region confirmed the arrest. “The man is in Yumbe police custody and the matter is still under investigation and if the investigation is concluded I will update the public,” Dragudu said.

Lewis Rubongoya the NUP secretary general said, the party’s plans to follow up his release, “our teams are following up like they always follow many cases of that nature, our legal team has been briefed about it, first of all we are demanding that he is released unconditionally because he did not commit any offence, they just found him at his work place and picked him away.”

National Unity Platform party has been in bitterness with the security operatives in the country since their 2021 general election campaigns with claims of torture against their leaders and supporters.
