OBONGI AUTHORITIES ORDER RESIDENTS TO TAKE CARE OF STRAY ANIMALS OR RISK FINES

Itula Sub county authorities have tasked the Local council one chairperson and the Refugee Welfare Committee (RWC) Leaders in Palorinya settlement of in Obongi district to take action on farmers who live their animals to stray around the communities since people have started receiving the first rains of the season.

Badaru Harriet the Community Development Officer for Itula Sub County called for immediate action on capture of stray animals from both the host community and settlements. “We should begin now capturing these stray animals and we bring them together.” she said.

Harriet disclosed that some people’s animals have started getting lost saying they even don’t know where they are. “Last year in my parish Logu so many animals were brought to the sub County where some of the animals were hosted including from the refugee community.  
     
Ongita Dongs Richard the Sub County chief Itula said the issue of stray animals is going to be taken seriously. “The issue of stray animals, the law in Uganda is one, like in Itula sub County whether being host or refugee, you are the LC 3 and RWC 3 we are charging you the same figure when you animal is impounded.” Ongita pointed.

Modi Charles Toloko one of the refuge leaders in the structure of the RWC 2 urged the RWCs to develop mechanisms of handling the issue of roaming animals within the community. “Am appealing to you my chairpersons of zone 3, zone 2 and even zone 1 during the rainy season, be serious handling cases of stray animals such that you can have peace within the community” he said

Juma Opaga one of the peace promoters based in zone II Luru village urged both the refugees and the host to take proper care of the animals during the rainy season such that they don’t destroy people’s crops

According to the sub county rates on stray animal’s cattle’s are charged 25,000 Ugandan shillings per night, goats and pig 20, 000 Ugandan shillings per animal per night.
