Leaders in Terego district have continued to call upon the residents to look for alternative means of solving land related issues other than fighting over land. This comes after a 27-year-old man, identified as Alema Wato, a resident of Ondukani Village, Olea Parish, Katrini sub county on February 25, 2024 allegedly beat up his father and his step father over one quarter piece of land.

Silvano Toki, the man’s step farther explained that, Wato could not listen to what people were telling him as they tried to solve the matter. “We sat down to talk about the said piece of land and when my brother said that, the land belongs to him, Alema also said that the land belongs to him because his father burnt his house and he takes the land to recover his burnt items. And in the middle of the meeting, Alema just stood up and start beating us in front of elders,” Sivano Toki explained.

However, the vice LC 3 chairman of Uriama sub county Hon Francis Ojobile says that, fighting over land will not bring transformation. “There is nowhere you can go if you jump into land clashes because the environment will not be peaceful,” said Francis Ojobile.

The Resident District commissioner of Terego Festus Ayikobua states that, land is God’s gift to the people and there is no need to fight over it. “I have seen in Terego that we are fighting over land, majority of those who owned the lands we are fighting over have died and we shall also die, so, why do we fight over it?,” the RDC questioned.

Whereas, the chairperson Terego district Hon Saka Wilfred noted that, due to the issue of insufficient land, people don’t love themselves, challenging them to desist from the act"maybe due to over population, land has really become insufficient in our district but we should not fight over it,” Saka advised.

Issues of land conflict started in Terego district longtime ago and is still going on amidst several efforts made by various stakeholders to curb the vice.
