Clan leaders and elders in Moyo district have been requested by the district stakeholders to exercise honesty and transparency in solving land dispute.

According to the leaders, some of these land conflicts are triggered by the elders who spread false information to the young people regarding land ownership.

Mr. Oduti Francis Aulogo the local council 3 chairperson of Aluru Sub County blamed elders for the many land wrangles in the communities simply because they tend to speak to the young people under the influence of alcohol.

“As Aluru sub county chairperson, am registering complains every week over land and what I have realized is that the elders contribute negatively in supporting these cases because you find that the elders after taking alcohol, begin telling the youths negative stories which they implement as the truth, “he explained.

Supretentant of police Dragudu Ignatius the  public relations officer for north west Nile region urged the elders to work together so that the true information is passed to  the youth to avoid escalating land conflicts  . “The elders have to come together such that they don’t confuse the young people and stop development,” he cautioned.

Meanwhile, Mr. Gore Goffin the Resident District Commissioner Moyo called for sincerity among the elders and respect of the elders by the youth. “I want to ask all our people in the community to always learn to cooperate and solve issues especially when it comes to land which requires a lot of patience from the elders, I want to ask all of them to be sincere but I also want to ask the young people to respect the elders to avoid confusion,” he remarked.

However, Drichi James an elder in ramogi parish, Aluru Sub County refuted this saying that sometimes the local leaders are also responsible for the increasing cases of land conflict especially where they have interest in the project.
