EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES COMMISSION TRAINS DOKOLO DISTRICT LEADERS ON LEGAL MATTERS

Some selected Dokolo District leaders have undergone a one-day training on legal matters conducted by Equal Opportunities Commission.

Harriet Nalukenge, the legal officer at Equal Opportunities Commission said that the training was primarily to train leaders on legal matters particularly the rights to non-discrimination and where to seek redress once one`s rights are violated.

James Otoo Apili, Dokolo district LC5  chairperson appreciated Equal Opportunities Commission for organizing the training, saying that the training will have multiplier effect to the leaders who have been struggling to handle some legal matters as they execute their duties.
 
Similarly, Barbra Akec Dokolo Resident District Commissioner is optimistic that, the training challenged leaders to work on their mindset in the area of service delivery which directly affects the people they serve.

On the other hand, Cecelia Atim Ogwal Woman Member of Parliament for Dokolo District used the opportunity to expressed her disappointment about the high disparities in the levels of development in Northern Uganda compared to other regions of the country which she said  that should be addressed if the region is to be at par with the other regions.

Christopher Odwe, the representative of workers to Dokolo District council and Alex Omara Etwop who also represents older persons to Dokolo District council both  raised concerns on the existing inequalities in some of the government programs meant to benefit workers and older persons in the district.
The Equal Opportunities Commission is a statutory body established by an Act of Parliament to effect Article 32(3) and Article 32 (4) of the Constitution of Uganda.

The Commission is mandated to eliminate discrimination and inequalities against any individual or group of persons on the ground of sex, age, race, colour, ethnic origin, tribe, birth, religion, health status, social or economic standing, political opinion or disability, and take affirmative action in favor of groups marginalized on the basis of gender, age, disability or any other reason created by history, tradition or custom for the purpose of redressing imbalances which exist against them, and to provide for other related matters.
