The five stance dilapidated latrine facility at Noor Islamic primary school is being shared by the pupils and teachers. The School management committee members who visited the facility say the latrine has dilapidated structures with cracks which put the lives of both teachers and pupils at a health risk.

Mr. Vundru Michael, a teacher at Noor primary school condemned the act of sharing latrines among learners and teachers. “The situation where male teachers and male pupils sharing the same latrine facility undermines their privacy and thus should be addressed by both the parents and district leaders before it worsens”, he said.

Mrs. Alia Rosemilly the head teacher of the school said that the facility was constructed way back in 2002 by local government and urged stakeholders to take precaution to rescue the lives of learners and teachers. “We are very surprised that male pupils sneak to male teacher’s latrine and share the same latrine facility, some of which have broken doors. Users risk contracting sanitary related diseases “said Allia.

Mali Michael the Moyo District Education Officer (DEO) said his office was not aware of such a sensitive situation in any of the schools in the area. He blamed it on lack of funds. "It is true that we do not have enough funds to do everything in schools but some situations call for emergencies”.

However, Letaru Gladys the female councilor of central ward Moyo town council said she would follow up on the matter to establish whether the affected school is among the priority areas for support in construction activities. She also admitted that schools with such challenges could be many in the district.

Mr. Alli Moses the school management committee chairperson revealed that in their meeting conveyed in the first term this year together with parents and PTA executives, they agreed to raise funds to construct emergency latrine to zero down worrying situation in the entire community as they lobby from other partners to come to their aid.
