WEST NILE REGION TO HOST REGIONAL EAST AFRICAN MDD COMPETITIONS

West Nile region has been selected to host the East African Music Dance and Drama Competitions to be hosted at National Teachers College Muni and co-hosted by Arua Public Secondary School, Mvara Secondary School, St. Mary’s Ediofe Girls secondary School, Muni Girls secondary School, St. Joseph’s College Ombaci, among other venues to be identified in the City Institutions.
   
St. Mary’s Assumpta Girls Secondary School from Adjumani district scooped a total 929 Points, to become the Champion of West Nile Regional Music and dance competitions.

Out of the 13 West Nile Districts, only five Districts were able to send in participating schools including, Arua District with One School, Arua City with five schools, Adjumani with three schools, while Moyo District was represented by two schools and Koboko District sent three schools whereas Zombo district was represented by one School.

Among the Ten Schools that Qualified out of the 15 schools to participate in the competitions Include: St Mary’s Assumpta Girls Secondary School, St. Francis Ayume secondary School, Mvara secondary School, Kochi secondary School, Adjumani Model secondary School, St. Mary’s Ediofe Girls secondary School, Muni Girls secondary School, St. Joseph’s College Ombaci, Biyaya secondary School, and Zeu secondary School.

Whereas the Five other Secondary Schools that Participated included Lefori Seed secondary School, Metu secondary School, Ushindi secondary School, Nyangilia secondary School and Arua secondary School.

The eleven events in which the 15 schools competed in included: Set Piece, Western Original composition African Style, Speech, Poem, Folksong, African original composition, Instrumental, Drama, Folk Dance, Creative Dance, and Sight Singing.

The Details of the performance shows Muni Girls Secondary Tying up with St. Mary’s Ediofe Girls Secondary School in the 6th Position with a total of 819 Points each of the schools as per the events as shown below:

According to the adjudicators sight singing, poems, speech, Drama and Western Choral singing are among the poorly done areas that need more improvement for the Schools to compete favorably in the international competitions.

Anzoa Brenda Mark is student of St Mary’s Assumpta Girls Secondary School and she tells Radio Pacis how much efforts they have put as students in the practice. “It was not an easy work for us to attain this position. It was Hard Work, tireless practice and we could take two hour break in a day while practicing. We have finally reaped big from what we have sown!” she revealed.  

Mwesigwa Asumpta is the Teacher in charge of Music Dance and Drama and also teachers Music and English Language in St Mary’s Asumpta Girls Secondary School. “The co-curricular activities like games and sports in our school we take them very serious. We have been using free times of after classes and weekends to do practice and the Girls were very committed to the tasks.” She narrated.
   
Sister Abiyo Rebecca the Head teacher St. Mary’s Asumpta Girls Secondary School says conducive environment coupled with supportive teachers who guided the students diligently compounded by the support of parents and the board of governors helped to reach this land mark Victory. “This is not the first time we have been emerging as the first in the region. We have been winning as champions in the region since 2016.” She celebrated.

Abima Abdulrahuman the general secretary of the organizing event says Music Dance and Drama can be a quick source of employment. Irene Ozitiru, is one of the Adjudicators and she revealed that to determine the winner it is the expert perception and analysis of the educators of what has been presented by the different schools with Clear guidelines clearly stipulated in the Adjudication.  “We are not going to use any other criteria outside but use the competence level displayed by the different groups to come up with a befitting mark.” She affirmed.

Meanwhile, Munduga Muzamil, the Chairman Central Organizing Committee for the West Niles’ secondary Schools Music Dance and Drama Competitions in 2023 says Most of the Schools in the Regions have become so academic that they do not give leisure time for students as a result; most learners tend to be bored of what is taking place in schools.

He continued to castigate schools among the growing concerns among Some West Nile Secondary Schools that can’t see eye to eye with their neighboring Secondary Schools. “Let’s emphasize MDD and also use it to create peace and Peace among the Schools.” He recommended.
