The Resident District Commissioner of Adjumani District Taban Peter has issued a strong warning to parents who have continued to keep their children at home. According to Taban, since the reopening of schools for the academic year 2023 for about 3 weeks now, some school age going children are seen selling items in the streets of Adjumani town and other surrounding urban areas instead of being in a class.

With the help of security operatives in the district, he threatened to arrest the parents of such children found to be on the street. ”For those of you who have not sent your children to school we are going to arrest them and fine you for neglect” said the RDC. He also noted that majority of the teachers in the district have not reported fully to their duty station.

Mr Dima Robert the Adjumani District Education Officer acknowledged the absence of other teachers and learners from schools saying it has an impact on the performance of the learners due to incomplete syllabus. Mr Robert adds, “The move by the law enforcers will help to get both teachers and learners back to school.” According to Dragudu Ignatius the acting police mouth piece of North West Nile region, it’s the responsibility of parents to send their children back to school. He said as police they will act accordingly on parents who have not sent their children to school.
