We shall arrest and fine Vandals – NWSC Warns

Vandalism of National Water & Sewerage Cooperation systems and illegal water connections are indicated among cases that hinders supply of water in Arua City. A recent case of vandalism was registered in Komite Ward within Ayivu West Division with no arrest made, but this raised concerns from management of National Water & Sewerage Cooperation, police, all preferring tough preventive measures and charge on persons confirmed guilty in the actions.

Komite Cell LC 1 Chairperson, Franco Komakech has cautioned the public that, culprits of such actions will be forwarded to face the law. “As we reach there (together with an official of NWSC), everybody took off. Jerricans that they abandoned were confiscated and are here with me” he narrated.
Police last month reported that vandalism of utility infrastructures has become an act of terrorism, welcoming Directorate of Public Prosecution effort in which a person found guilty be charged for violating the Terrorism Act 2002.

This according to police helps to protect utility infrastructures including water on which Ugandans rely. The Area Manager of National Water and Sewerage Cooperation, Jesca Ondoru reveals that, management is working together with security operatives to mark an end on vandalism and illegal water connections. “First of all, we shall arrest and fine you (culprits) with the help of police” she says.

Radio Pacis has learnt that, the fine for illegal connection of 472,000/= and an estimate of 24 months average consumption is calculated and later fined. While those who cut pipes to draw water either face arrests or equally pay heavy fine. Cases of vandalism are observed in different areas of the city, especially on underground and stand water pipes.
